Gifts for Your Little Traveler

Every year I look for gifts that are fun, have lots of play value, and will hold up for the entire year. It’s fun to try to find things that have a travel tie in too, and I always look for one or two things that help the kids expand their cultural horizons, I thought I would share some of our current favorites as well as the toys I’m considering for this year. We’ve owned the Playmobil Jet Plane for almost four years now. It has (mostly) survived three kids and is still a popular toy in our house. If you don’t fly frequently, this is also a great tool to help “act out” what would happen during a plane flight (and what is good airplane behavior) before each flight.

Airport Security With Kids, Babies and Toddlers (An Update for Dec 2011)

A lot of things have changed since I wrote this post on how to Breeze Through Airport Security With Kids. I’ve updated the original post, but I also want to highlight some of the things that may have changed since your last flight with kids.

Kids Under 12 Can Keep Their Shoes On
Here’s one thing that has gotten easier! Kids under age 12 no longer need to remove their shoes to go through airport security. They’ll still need to remove jackets, belts, and anything else that might have enough metal in it to set off the metal detector. Blankets, stuffed animals, toys and anything else your child is holding need to go through the x-ray machine too.

Health Concerns About Full Body X-Ray Scanners Remain
Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) The debate about whether the Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines now used by TSA to screen passengers are safe for the general public is still raging. This recent ProPublica article , points out flaws in safety testing of individual machines, holes in the oversight of this program, and lack of independent peer-reviewed research about the current technology, while the TSA maintains their position that the machines are safe because nobody has proven that they aren’t.

Afterall, the image I have of hostels (admittedly formed when I was young, on a tight budget, and kid-free) doesn’t exactly incorporate family. But when I looked at the properties, I was intrigued. This is Why We Travel

Most people fly the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (with the majority leaving after work on Wednesday). Unless there’s a Thanksgiving party they’ll be heartbroken to miss, the kids aren’t going to do much at school on Wednesday. Go ahead and pull them out of class for a day. Another strategy is to leave on Thursday morning and arrive in time for Thanksgiving dinner.In recent years, savvy travelers have started to return on Saturday (leaving Sunday to settle in at home). Guess what? It’s now the busiest travel day of the year! Instead, return on either Friday or Sunday.
